I have built dashboards in Cognos, Business Objects, Tableau, QlikView, and half a dozen other BI tools over the years. Power BI is the one I recommend without hesitation for analysts in India in 2026 — and not just because of Microsoft's market share. Here is the honest reason: Power BI has the best combination of capability and accessibility of any BI tool I have worked with. The free Desktop version is genuinely powerful — not a crippled trial. The learning curve from zero to a working dashboard is days, not weeks. And the DAX formula language, once you master it, lets you express business logic that would take weeks to build in older tools. What I tell every analyst I train: think of Power BI as three separate tools working together. Power Query is your data preparation layer — it is where you connect to sources and clean data. The Data Model is your calculation engine — where you define how tables relate and where DAX measures live. The Report Canvas is where you visualise and share. Most beginners ignore Power Query and the Data Model and just drag fields onto charts. That works for simple reports. It breaks badly when complexity arrives. This series goes deep on all three layers — because the analysts who understand all three are the ones companies hire and promote. The ones who only know the Report Canvas are the ones who hit a wall when a manager asks for a calculation that requires CALCULATE(), or a report that filters differently for different users.
